C&D - How to Tame Your Rabbits?

How to tame your rabbits?

Are you considering getting a rabbit? Or have you just chosen one? Then it might be a good idea to learn how to tame them. Don’t worry—it’s not too difficult, and there’s not much you can do wrong. However, there are a few useful tips that can make life easier for both you and your furry friend.

Learned young...

To make your rabbit as tame as possible, it’s best to start as early as possible. It’s important for a rabbit to learn from the very beginning that humans are not a threat. If you wait until they are older, the process becomes much more difficult. The key is to start as soon as possible.

Approach them from below

This is a golden rule that applies to almost all animals. It’s best not to approach your furry friend from above, as this can be very intimidating and may trigger fear responses. All your hard work to tame your rabbit could be undone in an instant, so be mindful of this. By approaching them correctly, you’ll ensure a strong and trusting bond.

Difference in breed

Don’t be too hard on yourself if your rabbit doesn’t become tame right away. Did you know that not every breed is equally easy to tame? Just like with dogs, this also applies to our rabbit friends.

Lop-eared breeds, such as the French Lop or the Dutch Mini Lop, are particularly suitable for taming. They are naturally friendly and affectionate, making them perfect companions for kids!

Play a home game first

Once they feel at home and safe in their cage, they will start seeing it as their territory. This makes it the perfect place to take the first steps in building trust. Start by gently petting and stroking them so they can get used to your touch and scent. Gradually, you can begin playing with them outside the cage, strengthening your bond and becoming the best of friends!
