C&D - Fungal infections in guinea pigs?

Fungal infections in guinea pigs?
A fungal infection or other **(skin) problem** in guinea pigs is often caused by stress and/or poor hygiene. To prevent these issues, make sure your pet feels comfortable and that its enclosure is always clean. A stress-free environment and proper hygiene are essential for keeping your guinea pig healthy and reducing the risk of infections.
Recognizing a sick guinea pig isn’t always easy. These small animals have a relatively high pain tolerance and won’t quickly show signs of illness. However, if you notice that your guinea pig is moving less, eating or drinking less, or developing bald spots, it’s a clear indication that something is wrong. Prompt attention and a vet check-up can help prevent serious health issues.
Stress lowers immunity
Stress is not just a modern illness for humans; guinea pigs can also suffer greatly from it. Their immune system becomes disrupted, making them more prone to illness.
Causes of stress in guinea pigs
There are various reasons why a guinea pig may experience stress, such as:
- Moving to a new home
- Introducing a new guinea pig
- A cage that is too small
- Loneliness or lack of companionship
- A sick, deceased, or missing cage mate
Guinea pigs also dislike loud noises, such as screaming children, loud music, or fireworks. To ensure your guinea pig feels safe and comfortable, provide:
- A spacious cage (preferably with daylight but without drafts)
- A companion for social interaction
- A calm and stable environment
- Plenty of (gentle) attention
- By reducing stress, you help support your guinea pig’s overall health and immune system.
Clean every week
