C&D - Recognizing age-related issues in dogs

Recognizing age-related issues in dogs
An older dog often starts to suffer from various age-related ailments. As an owner, it’s painful to see your loyal companion deteriorating and suffering from these discomforts. It’s important to recognize these ailments and intervene in time. In this way, you can improve your dog's quality of life and, of course, for as long as possible.
When do the first discomforts appear?
It’s not the same for all dog breeds, but on average, your dog will start experiencing the first ailments around their eighth year. That might seem early, as they may still appear to be in the prime of their life in your eyes. However, some signs of aging can be so subtle that you might not notice them right away. Meanwhile, your dog may actually be suffering, and these issues could potentially lead to serious problems over time.
Diseases and warning signs: Cancer
Nearly half of dogs over ten years old develop cancerous tumors. Symptoms: lumps, bleeding, diarrhea, weight loss…
Liver problems
Liver problems can lead to anemia, protein deficiency, and eventually death. Symptoms: excessive drinking, frequent urination, diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss…
Dental issues
Dental problems may not seem so serious at first glance. The issue is that they often lead to liver, heart, and kidney diseases. It's important to keep an eye on this! Especially since over 85% of dogs will experience this sooner or later. Symptoms: bad breath, difficulty eating, red gums.
Joint problems
One in five dogs, and even more in larger breeds, will eventually face arthritis or other joint problems. Without timely treatment, this painful condition will only worsen. Over time, there’s even a chance that the dog may no longer be able to walk. Symptoms: difficulty getting up, trouble walking… Paying attention to these signs is very important, as dogs won’t readily show that they are in pain.
Heart and lung diseases
This collection of diseases almost always has a poor outcome if not treated in time. It is therefore crucial to intervene promptly if you suspect something is wrong. Symptoms: decreased endurance, coughing, weight loss, shortness of breath… These are just a few of the possible issues a dog may face. If you have the slightest suspicion that your dog is suffering from something, don’t just think “it will pass,” but consult your veterinarian.
