Forest walks with your dog: The ultimate checklist

Getting some fresh air in the forest is great for both you and your dog. The scent of leaves, rustling wildlife, and all those exciting trails turn every forest walk into an adventure. But even in the woods, a little preparation goes a long way – for both safety and comfort.

Discover the ultimate checklist for a carefree forest walk!

Heading out into the woods with your dog? From a handy water bottle to tick protection, here’s everything you need for a relaxing day in nature.

What should you definitely bring?

✅ Leash (and possibly a long lead) – in many forests, dogs must be kept on a lead unless it’s a designated off-leash area.

Water + bowl – your dog can still get thirsty in the forest, especially in warm weather.

Poop bags – always clean up after your dog, even in the middle of nature.

Tick remover or tick hook – always check your dog for ticks after a walk.

Tasty treats or training snacks – perfect for rewarding good behaviour on the go.

Collar with ID tag or GPS tracker – for extra safety, especially if your dog tends to wander.

What to keep in mind before your forest adventure

✔ Check if it's an off-leash area before letting your dog roam free.

✔ Watch out for wildlife – dogs may suddenly bolt after deer or rabbits.

Don’t let your dog drink from still water – it may contain harmful bacteria.

Bring a towel if it’s wet – muddy paws are almost guaranteed.
