C&D - When and under what conditions can a kitten leave the nest?

When can a kitten leave the nest?
You often see it on social media: **"Who will adopt this adorable sweetheart?"** or **"Free kitten available for pickup."** Of course, we love seeing young kittens find a warm and loving home! But it’s important that adoption happens the **right way**. When is the best time for a kitten to leave the nest? And what medical care should be taken before adoption? Let’s find out!
Age
Young kittens are completely dependent on their mother’s milk for nutrition in the early weeks. As long as they are still nursing, it is far too early to separate them. But it’s not just about food—kittens learn a lot from their mother. Staying together long enough is crucial for their development.
In Belgium, the minimum age for kittens to leave the nest is set at 12 weeks. It used to be 7 weeks (when they stopped drinking mother’s milk), but this turned out to be far too early. Kittens taken away too soon often developed behavioral issues and other problems.
Mandatory vaccinations and a microchip
If you bring home a kitten that is at least 12 weeks old, it should not only be ready for the big world but also have received its two mandatory vaccinations, been dewormed, and microchipped—at least, if the person you’re adopting from is following the rules.
Speaking of rules, always ask for the medical passport when picking up a kitten. This allows you to verify that everything is in order and your new furry friend is off to a healthy start!
Mandatory sterilization or neutering
Additionally, your new furry friend must be sterilized or neutered before adoption. A recognized shelter will always ensure that a kitten meets all legal requirements before going to a new home.

Other important points to consider
If this is your first time having a cat as a pet, there are a few extra things to consider. Proper nutrition is essential, as well as providing one or more litter boxes.
Additionally, keeping your cat’s teeth healthy is very important. If your cat goes outdoors, make sure to take precautions to keep unwanted visitors away—such as other cats entering your home through the cat flap.
With the right preparation, you’ll create a safe and happy home for your new furry friend!
